BUSINESS TOOLS / MARGIN AND MARKUP CALCULATOR

Margin and markup calculator

Work out profit, margin and markup from cost and price, or find the selling price for a margin or markup you want.

-Profit
-Margin
-Markup

What is the margin and markup calculator used for?

Margin and markup both describe profit, but against different bases. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost. Shopkeepers, wholesalers, freelancers and manufacturers use them to set prices and check whether a deal is profitable.

Use the first mode to find the profit, margin and markup from a cost and a price. Use the other two modes to find the selling price that gives the margin or markup you want.

Why use this one

It shows margin and markup side by side, so you do not mix them up, and it works in both directions. A product cost of ₹600 sold at ₹800 has a 25% margin but a 33.3% markup. It runs in your browser, with no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin = (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost. For the same sale, markup is always the larger percentage.

How do I price a product for a 30% margin?

Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − 0.30). For a cost of ₹700 the price is ₹1,000. Use the second mode to do this automatically.

How do I price with a 30% markup?

Selling price = cost × 1.30. For a cost of ₹700 the price is ₹910. Use the third mode.

Is a 50% markup the same as a 50% margin?

No. A 50% markup is a 33.3% margin, and a 50% margin is a 100% markup.

Does this include GST or other costs?

No. Enter your cost and price without GST, and include shipping, packaging and other direct costs in the cost if you want a true profit figure.
