What is the gst calculator used for?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is added to the price of most goods and services in India. A GST calculator tells you the tax on a price, the final price a customer pays, or, working backwards, how much of a GST-inclusive price is tax. Shop owners, freelancers, accountants and buyers use it for quotations, invoices, price lists and checking a bill.

Enter the amount, choose the rate and whether the amount already includes GST. You also see the split: for a sale inside one state the tax is shared equally between CGST (Centre) and SGST (State), and for a sale to another state it is charged as IGST.

Why use this one

It shows the whole split on one screen, handles both directions (add GST and remove GST), and lists the older 12% and 28% rates so you can check invoices raised before the 2025 rate change. It runs in your browser: nothing you type is uploaded, there is no sign-up, and results update as you type.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add GST to a price?

Choose Add GST, enter the price without tax and pick the rate. The tool multiplies the price by the rate and adds it. For example, ₹1,000 at 18% gives ₹180 of GST and a total of ₹1,180.

How do I find the price before GST?

Choose Remove GST and enter the GST-inclusive price. The tool divides it by 1 plus the rate. For example, ₹1,180 at 18% gives ₹1,000 before tax and ₹180 of GST.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

When the seller and buyer are in the same state, the tax is split equally between CGST and SGST. When the sale crosses a state border, the whole amount is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same either way.

Which GST rates apply today?

Since 22 September 2025 most goods and services fall in the 5% and 18% slabs, with 40% for a short list of luxury and sin goods and special rates such as 3% on gold. The 12% and 28% options remain here only for older invoices. Always confirm the rate for your item on the official GST portal or with your accountant.

Is this calculator enough for filing returns?

No. It is a quick calculation aid. Invoices and returns must follow the GST rules for your business, and your accountant or the GST portal is the final authority.
